Pleasant Ridge Garden Club

Created in 1941, the Garden Club holds monthly meetings from September to June, spreading knowledge of gardening and promoting conservation of our natural resources.

The Club plants and maintains many beautiful gardens in our city parks, and holds special programs and events for the community – often with expert guest speakers – as well as sponsoring a Junior Garden club for elementary school-aged children.

Our Mission

The mission of this club shall be to stimulate knowledge and love of gardening, encourage home and community beautification, promote better horticultural practices, encourage all forms of conservation and environmental awareness and to affiliate within the Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc. and the National Garden Clubs, Inc.

Our Flower - the Iris

Tall, slender and scepter-like, the iris has for centuries been associated with royalty. It is also the symbol of communication.

Our Initiatives

Redesign of Stevenson Corner Garden

The city of Pleasant Ridge’s yearlong project to build bike lanes on Woodward Avenue destroyed parts of this garden. We are redesigning and rebuilding it.

Redesign of the Blue Star Memorial Garden

The Club, in conjunction with the Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc. dedicated the Blue Star Memorial in 2010. It is located in a small garden that the city was to maintain. The club decided this year to take over maintenance of the garden and is in the process of redesigning and replanting it.

Wildflower Garden Enhancements

After years of wear, the bridge in the wildflower garden was beyond repair. It was a unique feature in the garden and the children loved it so we are hoping residents will sponsor its replacement.

Bee City USA

The club recognizes, supports, and encourages pollinator conservation and is committed to becoming, in time, an affiliate of Bee City USA. This requires the city to be an active partner. We are in the process of educating both city officials and residents of Pleasant Ridge in making the community a better place for pollinators. To that end…

Many of our monthly programs are focused on pollinator friendly topics.

We are developing our pollinator garden into an educational specimen garden with signage and information sheets in the garden for visitors.

We are encouraging the city and residents to register their pollinator gardens on the Homegrown National Park website.

We are having conversations with city officials about the products and practices their vendors use in the gardens that they maintain

Youth Education

The club recognizes the need to educate and involve children in our gardens. After a several year hiatus, we have resumed quarterly meetings of our Junior Garden Club that engages young children in garden related activities. On our to do list is the creation of a fairy garden.
